Nov 2-- All Souls' Day

All Souls' Day is the day for honouring our dead loved ones. This day is observed by Catholics as a holy day to light candles and say prayers for the dead.  The whole school celebrated and offered prayers and  mass for the faithful departed souls.

Eternal rest,

grant unto them O Lord

and let perpetual light

shine upon them. 

May they rest in peace.

Amen.

Significance of ANZAC

Southern Light

Tama-rereti was interested of the stars he saw at night. One night, he saw stars dancing across the southern sky. He wanted to see where the stars were dancing so he, built a waka from a totara log.  He was chief of his tribe and he took his warriors and sailed away for a long time.  It was cold and very windy.  After a long journey they reached an island. When they came out from a wild storm, suddenly the big waves threw them to the rocks. The waka burned and broke. All of the warriors died except the two old men who were washed up to shore, barely alive.  The warriors who died were also washed up to shore. The two old men found the group of stars called the scorpion’s tail or the southern lights.

The legend explained the dancing lights in the southern sky now called Aurora.

The name “Aurora” comes from the Latin word meaning sunrise or the Roman goddess called Dawn. Aurora is a natural light in the sky, usually of greenish colour but sometimes red or blue.  This happens in the Antarctic pole. In the Southern hemisphere the effect is known as the Aurora Australis or the Southern Lights.  A beautiful and colourful blend of purple, blue, and green lights.  What a beautiful sight!

Did you you know that the bright colours on the monarch butterfly are warning signs? It tells us it is poisonous. The monarch butterfly and other butterflies used to live in Australia and the countries in the Pacific. But they get blown to New Zealand. Butterflies can’t survive here because our winters are too cold.The blue moon butterfly have white patches and big wings.  It is because when a bug tries to eat the blue moon it hides and pretends  to be a big bug. Butterflies are trans Tasman travellers.

“Aaaaaaaaa, what’s that!” I saw a big hand coming towards me. I tried to move away but the hand got me. It half dragged, half pulled me out to a stage. I knew I was in the shearing shed. Suddenly, I saw about a thousand beady eyes staring at me. I started to run away and the people started laughing.”What’s so funny?” I thought. Next thing, I know this funny little machine starts making a very loud noise and the tall woman is making it come toward me. I started to panic but I couldn’t move because the woman put my head between my legs. I started to yell for my friends but they couldn’t hear me.The woman started shearing my bottom. Finally, I stopped squirming and I let her finish. Then she pushed me down the sheep shute. It was really dark, but then I saw one of my friends stuck down here too.” Maybe it isn’t so bad down here after all” I thought.

If you don’t know who Marie Curie is, I’ll tell you what you should know about her. She is a scientist who discovered radium in X-rays.

Marie went to the University of Paris and studied Science. When she was there she didn’t speak French well but she caught up.

When Marie graduated she got married, her husband’s name is Pierre, Pierre and her discovered radium. They made something 100X stronger than uranium that can go through metal. After a few years, Pierre died by radium because radium can cure and harm.

Marie Curie won two Nobel Prizes one for Physics in 1903 and one for Chemistry in 1911. She also won the Davy medal in 1903 and Wallard Gibbs Award in 1921. She established the first military field during World War 1. She was married in France and was born on 7th November 1867 in Warsaw, in the Kingdom of Poland and died at the age of 66 in 4 July 1934.

Butterflies are strange creatures and wonderful flyers.   There are  lots  of weird facts about these insects.

Butterflies use their round knobs at the end of their antennae to smell with. They breathe with little holes which are called spiracles. Did you know butterflies have green blood and are cold blooded creatures? They have the same temperature as the air all around them. Most butterflies have six legs but the monarch butterfly has four legs. As the weather gets cold butterflies can’t fly unless the sun comes out or warm them up to fly. Wow,  butterflies’ wings are covered with little  tiny coloured scales that overlap like tiles on top of a house. Their brightly coloured wings warn others not to eat butterflies because they  taste bad.

We have more than six hundred muscles in our body, can we beat that. There are so many muscles in our body that make our body work. The biggest muscle is our gluteus maximus, the smallest muscle is called the stapedius. If we want to make our muscles strong then we need to do some training and eating lots of veggies. It is important  to keep our whole body healthy and clean. Muscles pull our bones to make the different parts of our body move, just like a puppet. Muscles can pull but they can't push, it means that we can move it up and down and side to side. They work together to make things move in the right direction.

Matariki is the Maori name for a group of seven stars known as the Pleiades star cluster. Matariki appears in the eastern sky sometime around the shortest day of the year, and is thought to determine how successful the harvest crop will be in the coming season. The brighter the stars, the more productive the crop will be.  When is Matariki celebrated? Matariki begins to rise in the last few days of May, and this symbolises the coming of the Maori New Year. Some iwi (tribes) start celebrations when Matariki is first seen, however it is the first new moon after Matariki that officially signals the Maori New Year. Some people celebrate the New Year on the day the new moon rises, and others celebrate on the day after the new moon. Celebrations can last up to 3 days. The Matariki new moon happens sometime in June. In 2012, Matariki is on the 21st of June. 2013- 10 June 2014- 28 June Why is Matariki important? In years gone by, Matariki was thought to determine your crop for the coming season, and therefore it was important to recognise the part it played in nature’s cycle. The disappearance of Matariki in Autumn, signaled the time to gather and preserve crops, and so was an important marker in the harvest calender. Nowadays, Matariki is seen as an important time to celebrate the earth, and show respect for the land on which we live.

What is heat?

Heat is the change of temperature. It is sensitive to both hot and cold. Heat is made up of atoms, molecules and energy. We can measure heat in three ways, conduction, convection, and radiation. Conduction is the process or action of heat or electricity that is directly transferred through a substance. The material is directly affected by the change of temperature. The process of heat or electricity, is passed through a substance. Convection is the movement caused within a liquid that likely transferred and spread heat. It is the rapid motion of heat causing less dense material to rise and the colder material to sink down. Radiation is the release of the electromagnetic waves as energy, which causes ionization of molecules to positive and negative atom bonding. By: Estelle

Book Review

We love books.  Here are some of the books we read and reviewed-

   CARBONEL

Carbonel is a story about an ordinary girl called Rosemary. Rosemary bought a cat called Carbonel and a witch broom. She got both of these things from a witch that she had bumped into in a marketplace. The story goes on when she discovers new things. She discovers that when she has the broom she can understand what Carbonel is saying. Another thing she discovers is that Carbonel is a royal cat and that he had been kitten-napped and still had to back and fight for the throne. I like this story because I like how the author hooks the reader and how the author made their adventures very fun and thrilling. I like Rosemary’s personality because she is a fun person and she is a character that always hopes for success. I also like her personality because she always insists to help and she looks forward to new things. I recommend this book for people who are interested in magic and for people who love adventures.

The Invention of Hugo Cabret    

The invention of Hugo Cabret is about a boy named Hugo who lives with his uncle in a clock. One day his uncle leaves and never comes back. This is about how he copes to live by himself for many years.

I liked the way the author kept the book interesting and it was easy to picture it in your head. The author made it seem so real that it felt like you were in that setting. Especially when Hugo and his friend were looking out of the biggest clock in the station to reveal the beautiful city of love (Paris).

I recommend this book to people who love to read long books and to people who love a good challenge when they read.

The head of this animal is a bison. It’s tail is a woolly spider monkey. This animal lives in desert and dry lands of Africa and Asia. It is very good at climbing, loves to eat bananas. The body is a cheetah it eats meat too. The bison  is a big wild bull that has a lot of hair that goes down to the ground.  It lives on the mountains of Africa too. Biscmonkeys  love to chase deers and small animals for food just like cheetahs They like to stay in high mountains and  in the desert of South Africa.

Chee-ingo-bear

It has a bear face, it could roar and scare its enemy.  It has flamingo body and flamingo legs. The pink flamingo body  protects the Chee-ingo bear from the  heat of the sun.  It has a cheeta’s  tail  for balance as it runs  and flies to catch its food. Because of its long tail and small fat body it moves slow in catching prey. He is lucky to catch a deer that runs  in his direction.  It is a carnivore who loves to eat deers, rats, frogs, small animals  and birds. They live in groups and hunt together.  They live in the plains of the African jungle.

I have lion legs, elephant trunk, butterfly wings, tiger paws, sea lion ears,a lion tail and peacock crest. I have butterfly wings for flying away from predators. I have an elephant trunk it has strong muscles that could lift a person or a big animal. I have sea lion ears for hearing above and below the water. I have lion’s  legs that are extremely powerful and very strong. I have a peacock crest  on the top on my head. I have a tiger paws to scratch enemies. I am dangerous.

This is a Cob conda illa li bat. It has lion legs that helped it run fast, red spitting cobra hood that made me look bigger and more threatening, long gorilla arms so I can take a walk on my arms to the park, bat wings for flying up high in the sky, and a snakes tongue for smelling while tasting the air.

This is a vicious animal from the African jungles and caves. It is an  omnivore. It can glide, soar, run, and fly.  Its favorite food are  mangoes, eagles, apples, and crocodiles. Its very poisonous.

It is very good at fighting other animals and protecting itself.  It is so strong it could break a train in half. It is 95 meters tall and 2 meters wide. It is as fast as an angry lion. It has great balance and great at soccer. The long gorilla arms and bat wings make it great at basketball.
