Why is digital learning important?

WALT write an explanation

Why is digital learning important?

Digital learning is important because it is a practice that strengthens student’s learning experience. It is also an opportunity to learn anywhere at any time. Learning in a digital way helps students to be more confident in what they wish to do. It develops their creativity. Students can find answers quicker and it helps them understand things better.
Digital learning forms strong teamwork by working with others and learning from others. It helps students produce more effort into their learning and achieves good assessments. Students learn things they do not know and discover new things.

Rap-unzel

Play review-

On Wednesday November the 12th actors from the N.Z Auckland playhouse came to CTK school and performed a play about the story Rapunzel, but they changed it into a rap. The actors were Jack, Jane and Ben.

When I walked into the hall I was astonished because there was a perfect background and you could see a tower that was so high I couldn’t even touch the top. When the show started it was boring at first but then when Prince Rupert started rapping I began to enjoy it. I was so excited when he  pointed at me and asked me what my favourite song was and I said  “About that bass” by Meghan Trainor. But the highlight was when Rapunzel and Prince Rupert kissed and everyone went “ewwww”.

I recommend this to all ages because it is funny and it is appropriate for children as well for adults.

Yesterday on the 12th of November, a group named Auckland Playhouse came to Christ the King to perform a show called Rap-punzel. It was acted out by three people Jake, Jane and Ben. The name of the play was “A land far far away’s got talent” they presented it as if it was an X factor idol show.

The funniest thing was when Prince Rupee tried to sing, but he couldn’t and embarrassed himself in front of the whole audience and Rapunzel. The whole school laughed so loudly I thought there was going to be an earthquake. The most disgusting part was when Rapunzel and Prince Rupee kissed, it was so disgusting the audience screamed out “eww” or “yuck”.

The Auckland Playhouse came to school and we went to see the Rap-unzel story. They had 3 actors- Jane, Jake and Ben, and they played many roles. The story was like the X factor show where Simon cow was looking for talents. It was set in the far, far away land.

My favourite part was when Rupe’s pants fell down that was what you call real theatre comedy. The people in my class laughed and laughed until things got pretty serious and by that I mean kissing. Rapunzel kissed the prince and she also kissed the bad guy Simon cow, but at the end Simon cow was the good guy.

Seeing live theatre is amazing, instead of watching it on tv.  You see it in real life and real people are acting out their roles.

All Saints Day Liturgy

Nov 1 is All Saints Day, the day we commemorate all souls who have attained beatific vision in heaven.

A Catholic Prayer in Praise of the Saints.

How shining and splendid are your gifts, O Lord
which you give us for our eternal well-being
Your glory shines radiantly in your saints, O God
In the honour and noble victory of the martyrs.
The white-robed company follow you,
bright with their abundant faith;
They scorned the wicked words of those with this world's power.
For you they sustained fierce beatings, chains, and torments,
they were drained by cruel punishments.
They bore their holy witness to you
who were grounded deep within their hearts;
they were sustained by patience and constancy.
Endowed with your everlasting grace,
may we rejoice forever
with the martyrs in our bright fatherland.
O Christ, in your goodness,
grant to us the gracious heavenly realms of eternal life.

The myths and legends of the different cultures-

Zimbabwean Legend

The Legend of the tree with no name
By: Gina

There was a family that starved because there was no rain. So the man sang to the tree of his troubles. “Oh tree with no name my throat is dry I am thirsty I will go to Marondera how I wish I could find something to eat.” Then yummy proper food fell out of the tree. After that he went home with a full belly. When he got home his wife had prepared dinner but he said I do not want to eat because he ate the food from the tree. So his daughter wondered why his dads tummy was fat.

The next day when the dad went to the tree his daughter followed him to the tree. The dad had no idea her daughter was following him. She hid behind the rock and the dad sang. “My wife is so greedy she eats all of the dinner look how I grow thinner and thinner.” The daughter was so surprised yummy proper delicious food came out of the tree with no name.

The daughter ran to her mum and told her that there was a magical amazing tree.  She told her mum, “come with me tomorrow when dad goes to the tree we will hide behind the rock and see what dad eats.” “Ok we will see,” said her mum.

The dad did not eat his dinner, he insisted that his family should eat first.  The mum wondered why he would not eat.  She thought maybe my daughter was right. So then the next day the mum followed the suggestion of the daughter- to follow the dad to the amazing tree and hid behind the rock. The father began to sing suddenly the mother sprang in front of him and sang, “this greedy selfish husband of mine eats alone while the children starve.”  Suddenly the tree began to shake. Food fell down from the tree. The whole family picked out their favourite food to eat, they love the food they ate.  The father did the same.  He did not like the food for they all tasted bitter.  Anything he ate was bitter.

This Filipino legend tells us about the origin of the touch-me-not (mimosa pudica) plant.

The legend of Makahiya
by KC

There was once a girl called Maria,a very shy girl, who lived with her parents, Aling Iska and Mang Dondong,in a small village. Maria loved to stay in her garden, which was known for its lovely flowers. One day, bandits raided the village, and fearing for her life, Maria’s parents hid her in the garden. While Aling Iska was praying to God for her daughter's safety, the bandits broke into the house and hit Maria’s parents on the head. After stealing things in the house, the bandits went.

When Maria’s parents woke up, they ran to the garden to look for Maria, but could not find her. They searched everywhere and started to despair, when something pricked Mang Dondong’s feet. Both of them looked closer at the tiny plant closing its leaves. At that moment they realised, that their shy Maria has been changed by the gods into a plant. They named the plant -Makahiya (Tagalog for shyness) .

The Samoan Legend of-
The Turtle and the Shark
by Remuel

Long ago, there lived a lady and a man who where very much in love. They were living on the island of Savai’i. One day the man was called away to attend a high chiefs meeting and the young lady decided to go with him. Instead they went to the island of Tutuila, American Samoa, where they stayed with some friendly villagers. After a time they knew that their disappearance would be noticed and therefore their lives together would be short lived. So they decided to give up their lives by jumping off a cliff in exchange for the lives of their families. The gods took pity on them and they were changed into a Turtle and a Shark so that they can live for eternity.

The legend of KaldI

There once lived a young Ethiopian shepherd boy named Kaldi. He lived in a small village where he looked after animals and food. One day, he noticed that his goats were behaving odd after eating the bright red berries from the bush nearby. If he wanted to cure his sickness, he decided to try these fruits. Hed found the taste was sour. After a while, he started to stay alert and be full with energy.

On the way, he picked some fruits to give some to his wife. When he got there, he gave it to her and she described the taste of the berries. They both thought that this was a gift from God.

After a few days, Kaldi took some of the fruits and leaves from the bush to a monastery. As he entered in the monastery, Kaldi told his experience to the monks.   After believing of what Kaldi said was true, he encouraged other monks to cook the fruits and the leaves.

People thought that the outcome was terrible so they the remains into the fire, thinking that was the devil’s work. All of a sudden, a dazzling aroma began to come out of the fire. A new idea got them at once. With roasting and boiling the grains, it became a wonderful flavour. After drinking this new drink, they found themselves to stay up all night. They finally used this new drink as a new type in order to stay awake longer to pray all night long.

NEWS Flash

We are learning to summarise news events.

Close call!

Everyday asteroids pass Earth. An asteroid passed New Zealand a few days ago. Asteroids that pass Earth always came too close. NASA has satellites in space could not monitor and watch asteroids passing by earth.
It came too close about 40,000 kilometers distance away. It was the size of a football field.
The asteroid passed New Zealand at 6:00 in the morning.
If it had hit Earth this could have been a big explosion.
What a surprising Shock!

Virtual baby says a first word

BabyX is a 3D computer-animated child.  She was created in the University of Auckland in 2012 and has just uttered its first word.

She can see, reach and respond to what is in front of her and she is learning more and more as she gets older like a real child. The University shows a video that the virtual baby can read out words that are in front of her and also can recognize pictures. She smiles and sometimes giggles when appreciated. Her artificial brain releases dopamine,  that is the reason why she smiles; her artificially brain thinks she has done something good.

They hope that this technology will help children read and maybe used by teachers in schools.

At this stage they don’t know if Baby X will be allowed to keep growing older or do more human thinking ways.

A stray dog found an abandoned and disowned baby in a forest in Kenya. The dog carried the baby across a busy road passing through dirty road, dangerous area and even through a barbed wire fence to her litter of puppies in a very poor community in Nairobi. She brought the baby to her place where she also cared for her own babies. She took the baby as one of her own.
One of the  local resident, Lonet Gogany found the baby among the puppies.  The baby was abandoned two days before the dog found her. The baby was taken to a nearby hospital. But so far no one has claimed her.
The dog who saved her now lived with her puppies at an animal shelter.

Restaurants ban ketchup

At the Mad Fresh Bistro, one of the biggest restaurants in Florida, having ketchup with any meal are banned for over 10 years old diners. The chef and restaurant owner says he is so tired of customers asking for ketchup with their meal, especially with burgers. He says that they do not need ketchup as they already have sauce on them. They even post this warning on their website-- if you are over 10 yrs old, ketchup will not be provided.

It is crazy enough to banned salt too.  The chef mentioned, “Customers should trust the chef to provide what the dish needs before it is served to them.”  Would  you eat in this restaurant? Is this for health reason?

Liezl's Compilation of Book Reviews

God is present in our lives

Religious Education- Strand: Sacrament

Ever since the creation of the world, God's eternal power and divine nature, invisible though they are, have been understood and seen through the things God has created.
Romans 1:20

We are learning to recognise everyday signs of God's presence.
*we went for a walk around the school ground
*we identified signs of God's presence noticed during the walk
*we picked one and took a picture
*we wrote a reflective prayer.

These are our work:

Lord thank you for this blade of grass.
This grass smells like perfume spraying nice and lovely scent. This grass looks like a nail nailed on a wood, like Jesus was on the cross. This grass feels like a soft feather in the ground swaying in the wind.
Lord, I love how you showed your love in nature. Thank you Lord for grass because without it animals would not live.

Gina’s prayer

IMG_1512.JPGLord, thank you for showing me love in this breathtaking creation. It smells like beautiful nature. It looks like a pretty clover. It feels like a soft dove. You have shown me that you love me in this creation. Lord thank you so much.

Joshua J's Prayer
Thank you God for this beautiful and inspirational flower that you made.

You show a lot of details and spray of colour  in it’s petals. It smells like poison but I still like it.

It looks delightful.

It feels so holy as I hold it.

You show your love in this part of nature

Thank you God for this lovely creation.

My prayer

Lord thank you for all your power and strength, you showed us grass and flowers as a sign of your presence. You showed me the gift of love.
And you made this wonderful grass.
Look at the beautiful creation you have done.

My prayer
Lord, thank you for this rock and it has shown that you did your best. You showed your greatness by creating this world. The rock feels like a soothing heart. It smells like plain flour. It looks like a lizard head. You showed us your love in nature. Thank You Lord for showing your strength and power.

You created the world with love and that’s why I adore you.
