Ash Wednesday is the beginning of the season of Lent and prepares us for Easter. It is the time for fasting, alms giving and prayer.
The ashes were burnt the day before from the blessed palms used in the Palm Sunday the previous year.
Time to turn away from sins and return to the gospel.
I love when it is ash Wednesday. You get a cross which is made out of burnt ashes and the priest says "Turn away from sin and be Faithful to the gospel".
